Japan Trip Budget Calculator

Estimate what a trip to Japan might cost per day and in total, based on travel style, trip length and group size. Results are rough planning ranges.

How it works: pick a travel style and the calculator fills in typical per-day costs in yen. Every figure is editable — replace them with real quotes as you plan. These are rough, approximate ranges, not quotes. See our budget breakdown guide for the reasoning behind the defaults.

What the styles assume

  • Budget: hostel dorms or capsule hotels, convenience-store breakfasts, set-lunch restaurants, mostly free sights.
  • Mid-range: business or mid-range hotels, casual restaurants and izakaya, a paid attraction or two each day.
  • Luxury: upscale hotels or ryokan, fine dining, guided tours and taxis.

Costs are much higher in peak periods (cherry blossom season, Golden Week, Obon, New Year) and in Tokyo and Kyoto than in smaller cities.
