Matsumoto travel guide

Matsumoto is a relaxed, walkable city in Nagano Prefecture, home to one of Japan's few original castle keeps, a lively crafts and café scene, and easy access to the Northern Alps.

Overview

Matsumoto Castle's main keep, completed in the late 16th century, is designated a National Treasure. Its black-lacquered walls earned it the nickname 'Crow Castle', and with the Japanese Alps behind it, it's one of the most photogenic castles in Japan.

The city sits on the route between Tokyo and the Japan Alps, so it pairs naturally with Takayama, Kamikochi or the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. Its centre is compact: you can walk from the station to the castle in about 15–20 minutes.

A street of white-and-black namako-walled storehouses converted into craft shops, cafés and galleries.

Nawate-dori

A small riverside street of stalls and souvenir shops, known for its frog motif.

Top sights & experiences

Matsumoto Castle

Climb steep wooden stairs through six floors to the top of the original keep. Queues form on weekends and holidays — arrive early.

Matsumoto City Museum of Art

Includes a permanent collection of works by Yayoi Kusama, who was born in Matsumoto; her polka-dot designs even decorate the building.

Former Kaichi School

A striking 1876 school blending Western and Japanese design, now a museum.

Japan Ukiyo-e Museum

A large private collection of woodblock prints in the western suburbs.

Matsumoto Timepiece Museum

Small museum of historic clocks, some still working.

What to eat

Shinshu soba

Nagano is famous for buckwheat noodles; Matsumoto has many soba shops, especially near the castle.

Sanzoku-yaki

Large pieces of fried chicken marinated in garlic and soy — a hearty local dish.

Basashi

Horse-meat sashimi, a regional specialty (skip if it isn't for you).

Oyaki

Stuffed dumplings filled with vegetables such as nozawana greens or sweet bean paste.

Where to stay by budget

Budget

Several hostels and guesthouses close to the station and Nakamachi.

Mid-range

Business hotels around the station; some with hot spring baths.

Luxury

Ryokan in nearby Asama Onsen and Utsukushigahara Onsen, a short bus ride away.

Rough nightly ranges: hostels and capsule hotels often run a few thousand yen per person; business hotels commonly ¥8,000–¥20,000 per room; upscale hotels and ryokan can be far higher, especially in peak seasons. See our accommodation guide.

Getting there

The JR Azusa limited express runs from Shinjuku in roughly 2.5–3 hours. From Nagoya, the JR Shinano takes around 2 hours. Highway buses from Shinjuku are cheaper but slower. Matsumoto also has a small airport with domestic flights.

Getting around

The centre is walkable, and the city's Town Sneaker loop buses cover the main areas. Free rental bicycles have been offered in the city — ask at the tourist information centre.

Day trips & side trips

Kamikochi

A spectacular alpine valley in Chubu-Sangaku National Park with flat riverside trails and dramatic peaks. Open roughly mid-April to mid-November; private cars are banned, so go by train and bus or direct bus (about 1.5–2 hours).

Daio Wasabi Farm (Azumino)

One of Japan's largest wasabi farms, with clear streams and water wheels; try wasabi soft-serve.

Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

Buses, cable cars and trolley buses through the Alps, including the 'snow wall' in spring (seasonal, usually mid-April to November).

Narai-juku

A well-preserved post town on the old Nakasendo road, about an hour by train.

Best time to visit

Cherry blossoms around the castle bloom later than Tokyo — typically early to mid-April. Summer is warm but drier and cooler in the evenings than lowland cities, and is the best time for Kamikochi hikes. Autumn colour in the Alps starts in early October at altitude. Winter is cold and Kamikochi is closed, but the castle is beautiful under snow.

Local tips

  • Check Kamikochi's open season and bus timetables before planning a trip.
  • The castle's internal stairs are very steep — wear shoes that slip on and off easily.
  • Pair Matsumoto with Takayama via the Nohi bus over the Alps (seasonal).
  • Many cafés on Nakamachi close early in the evening.
