城市概覽

Naoshima's transformation into an art island began in the late 1980s with the Benesse group. Today the island has several museums, outdoor sculptures and installations inside old houses. Because many works are site-specific, the experience mixes art, architecture, landscape and the sea.

Naoshima is part of Kagawa Prefecture, between Okayama on Honshu and Takamatsu on Shikoku. It rewards slow travel: an overnight stay makes it easier to secure museum slots and enjoy the island after day-trippers leave. Every few years the islands host the Setouchi Triennale art festival, when visitor numbers surge.

必訪景點與體驗

  • Chichu Art Museum: A largely underground museum by Tadao Ando housing works by Claude Monet, James Turrell and Walter De Maria. Timed-entry tickets must be bought online in advance.
  • Benesse House Museum: A combined museum and hotel with contemporary art inside and outside, overlooking the sea.
  • Yellow Pumpkin: Yayoi Kusama's polka-dotted pumpkin on a pier — Naoshima's most famous image. It was restored and reinstalled after typhoon damage in 2021.
  • Art House Project: Installations in renovated houses around Honmura; some require separate tickets or have limited entry.
  • Lee Ufan Museum: A minimalist Ando-designed space dedicated to the Korean artist's paintings and sculptures.
  • Teshima Art Museum: On neighbouring Teshima, a single concrete shell by Ryue Nishizawa and artist Rei Naito that many visitors find unforgettable. Timed tickets required.

在地美食與特產

  • Island cafés: Small cafés in Miyanoura and Honmura serve curries, set lunches and seafood. Many close early or on certain weekdays, so plan meals.
  • Sanuki udon: Kagawa Prefecture is Japan's udon capital — eat it in Takamatsu or Uno before or after your visit.
  • Seto Inland Sea seafood: Octopus, sea bream and other local fish appear on island menus.

交通方式與當地移動

Ferries run from Uno Port (Okayama Prefecture; JR Uno Line from Okayama, about an hour) to Miyanoura in around 20 minutes, and from Takamatsu (Shikoku) in around 50 minutes by ferry or about 30 minutes by high-speed boat. Ferries also connect Naoshima with Teshima and Inujima. Timetables are limited, especially in winter — check the latest schedules.

Town buses run between Miyanoura, Honmura and the Benesse area, with a Benesse shuttle inside the museum zone. Electric-assist bicycles are the most popular way to get around — the island is hilly, and rentals sell out on busy days.

住宿區域建議

  • 經濟型與青年旅館: Guesthouses and minshuku in Miyanoura and Honmura (limited rooms; book early).
  • 中價位商務飯店: Small hotels and guesthouses, or stay in Okayama or Takamatsu and take an early ferry.
  • 奢華飯店與溫泉旅館: Benesse House lets guests stay among the art, with some museum access after general hours.
