Matsumoto Castle's main keep, completed in the late 16th century, is designated a National Treasure. Its black-lacquered walls earned it the nickname 'Crow Castle', and with the Japanese Alps behind it, it's one of the most photogenic castles in Japan.
The city sits on the route between Tokyo and the Japan Alps, so it pairs naturally with Takayama, Kamikochi or the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. Its centre is compact: you can walk from the station to the castle in about 15–20 minutes.

- Matsumoto Castle: Climb steep wooden stairs through six floors to the top of the original keep. Queues form on weekends and holidays — arrive early.

- Former Kaichi School: A striking 1876 school blending Western and Japanese design, now a museum.

交通方式與當地移動
The JR Azusa limited express runs from Shinjuku in roughly 2.5–3 hours. From Nagoya, the JR Shinano takes around 2 hours. Highway buses from Shinjuku are cheaper but slower. Matsumoto also has a small airport with domestic flights.
The centre is walkable, and the city's Town Sneaker loop buses cover the main areas. Free rental bicycles have been offered in the city — ask at the tourist information centre.
