Overview
Fukuoka combines two historic towns: Hakata, the old merchant district, and Fukuoka, the former castle town. Its airport is just a few subway stops from Hakata Station, which makes it one of the easiest cities in Japan to arrive in. It's also close to South Korea, with ferries to Busan.
It makes a great base for Kyushu: the Kyushu Shinkansen runs south to Kumamoto and Kagoshima, and the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen and limited express trains link to Nagasaki.

Business hotels around Hakata Station for rail trips, or Tenjin/Nakasu for nightlife.
Luxury
Upscale hotels by the bay and in Tenjin.
Rough nightly ranges: hostels and capsule hotels often run a few thousand yen per person; business hotels commonly ¥8,000–¥20,000 per room; upscale hotels and ryokan can be far higher, especially in peak seasons. See our accommodation guide.
Getting there
Fukuoka Airport (FUK) is about 5 minutes from Hakata by subway (domestic terminal; the international terminal connects by shuttle bus or road). Hakata Station is the western terminus of the Sanyo Shinkansen — around 5 hours from Tokyo, or 2.5 hours from Shin-Osaka on the fastest trains.
Getting around
The subway connects the airport, Hakata, Nakasu, Tenjin and Ohori Park. Nishitetsu buses and trains cover the rest, including Dazaifu. IC cards (including Hayakaken and Sugoca, plus Suica) work across the network.
Day trips & side trips
Dazaifu
Shrine, Kyushu National Museum and a pleasant shopping street.
Yanagawa
Punt boat rides through canals, and steamed eel.

Beaches, cafés and the 'Wedded Rocks' at Sakurai Futamigaura.

Best time to visit
Spring and autumn are comfortable. The Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival (1–15 July) culminates in a pre-dawn float race. Hakata Dontaku is held 3–4 May. Summers are hot and humid with occasional typhoons.
Local tips
- Yatai typically open from early evening; many close on bad-weather days.
- Fukuoka Airport's proximity makes it great for the last night of a trip.
