Month by month

  • January: Cold, dry and clear on the Pacific side. New Year (1–3 Jan) means some closures and busy shrines. Great for skiing and onsen.
  • February: Sapporo Snow Festival, plum blossoms late in the month, quiet sightseeing.
  • March: Cherry blossoms usually start in Kyushu and Tokyo in the second half. Japanese school holidays begin.
  • April: Peak blossom in early April for Tokyo/Kyoto, then further north. Golden Week starts at the end of the month.
  • May: Fresh green, comfortable weather; avoid Golden Week if you can.
  • June: Rainy season in most of Japan — hydrangeas and green moss gardens; Hokkaido is lovely. See our rainy season guide.
  • July: Gion Matsuri in Kyoto, summer starts after rainy season ends; Mt Fuji climbing season opens.
  • August: Hot and humid; Obon holidays (mid-August) are busy; fireworks festivals; best for Hokkaido and the Alps.
  • September: Still warm; peak typhoon month; fewer foreign tourists.
  • October: Comfortable, autumn leaves begin in Hokkaido and the mountains; Halloween in Shibuya.
  • November: Autumn colour peaks in Tokyo and Kyoto in mid-to-late November; crisp weather.
  • December: Early December autumn leaves in Kyoto; winter illuminations; ski season starts.

Cheapest time to visit

Generally January–early March (outside New Year and Chinese New Year), June, and parts of September and early December offer lower hotel rates. Flights depend on your departure country.

Least crowded time

Mid-January to February and June tend to be quietest for major sights. Visit popular temples early in the morning in any season.

Our recommendation for a first trip

If you can choose freely, aim for mid-to-late October, early November, or May (after Golden Week) — good weather with slightly fewer crowds than cherry blossom season. If blossoms are your dream, read our cherry blossom forecast guide.
