Overzicht
Osaka has long been a merchant city, and its motto is often said to be kuidaore — 'eat until you drop'. It splits roughly into Kita (north, around Umeda/Osaka Station) and Minami (south, around Namba and Shinsaibashi).
Hotels are generally cheaper than in Kyoto, and fast trains reach Kyoto, Nara and Kobe in well under an hour, making Osaka a smart Kansai base.
