Aperçu Général
Unlike many Japanese castles, which are post-war concrete reconstructions, Himeji's main keep is original, dating to the early 17th century. It survived wartime bombing and earthquakes and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. A major restoration finished in 2015 left its plaster walls brilliantly white.
The castle is a straight 15–20 minute walk (or short bus ride) up the main avenue from Himeji Station. Himeji also sits on the Sanyo Shinkansen, so you can stop here on the way between Osaka and Hiroshima, using coin lockers at the station.
Que Voir & Que Faire
- Himeji Castle: Climb six floors of the wooden main keep via steep stairs (shoes off; bags provided). Allow 1.5–3 hours. Admission for visitors who don't live in Himeji was raised in 2026 — check the current fee on the official site.
- Kokoen Garden: Nine Edo-style walled gardens built on the site of former samurai residences, with a tea house and pond. Combination tickets with the castle may be available.
- Engyō-ji on Mt Shosha: A mountaintop temple complex reached by ropeway and a forest walk, around 30 minutes from Himeji Station by bus. Its wooden halls appeared in the film 'The Last Samurai'.
- Himeji City Museum of Art: A red-brick former army building with European and Japanese art, beside the castle grounds.
Gastronomie & Spécialités Locales
- Himeji oden: Oden stew served with a ginger-soy dipping sauce.
- Anago (conger eel): Grilled conger eel over rice, a specialty of the nearby coast.
- Almond toast: A sweet café-breakfast toast that's a local favourite.
Accès & Transports
Shinkansen: around 30 minutes from Shin-Osaka, roughly 45–60 minutes from Kyoto, and roughly 1 hour from Hiroshima on the fastest services. JR Special Rapid (no Shinkansen surcharge) takes around 1 hour from Osaka and 40 minutes from Kobe's Sannomiya. The Sanyo Railway is another option from Kobe. JR Pass covers JR trains.
Walk from the station to the castle along Otemae-dori. Loop buses also run to the castle and to the Mt Shosha ropeway.

- Économique: Business hotels around the station, cheaper than Osaka or Kobe.
